Dre's Training Tip

Dre Training tip

Winter is now fully under way in most parts of the world, It's nice to know that during the saddle seasons we can have a short dedicated window to focus on preparation. Even if that time period is short, some specific training can be very helpful when returning to bike season.

Winter is the time to round out the muscles as we discussed - so other sports are are great way to do this even if you are in the gym with a focused strength component.  The 'Heart and Lungs' don't know the difference between skiing, hiking, snowshoeing, swimming, running or hip hop dance classes, but the legs will know the difference between going hard and easy. Take some time to ease into new sports and your muscles will thank you.

If you are lifting weights (or alpine skiing), which is a great thing to do for young and old, then you will need some easy miles to keep the blood pumping and this will increase the effectiveness of your strength work, but the ratio of cardio will be smaller. If you are solely doing cardio efforts then you will want to consider the intensity and the ratio of cruise to hammer. The winter is considered general training or "all body", so get out there and enjoy, but stay off the gas for the most part. These other exercises will greatly benefit your transfer back to the bike and carry your fitness through winter and potentially give you a higher platform to start on for next summer.

As this is November I want to add that a small block of training in the first couple weeks of December will allow you to relax over Christmas and New Years, not worry about squeezing work outs in. Then when the New Year starts you can pick up where you left off and feel good about not loosing the fitness you have gained or maintained.

Cheers
Dre

What year did you participate in the BC Bike Race?
2011

What peaked your interest in the BC Bike Race over the other bike races out there?
Took up Mountain Bike Racing in 2010, after spending the Previous 12 Month's Running Marathon's across the USA with My Wife. Next thing on my Bucket List was to do an Extreme Stage Mountain Bike Event looked at the Cape Epic & BC Bike Race. BC Bike Race won out because I have lots of Family Living in BC that I could see and visit, plus the support would be great as well.

Which was your favorite day? And why?
Day (1) in Cumberland because my Mom Sister Brother Daughter & Grandson were there to see me off on the Epic Journey and at the Finish line to Greet me. Than Day 6 because I had no Idea My Mom & Sister were going to surprise me and be at the Finish line. By this time my emotions were boiling over.

Do you have a training tip for others that turned out to be your secret weapon?

Yes I followed Andeas Hesler's 12 Week Training Program to prepare for the BC Bike Race, did lots of Core Training Mixing Yoga, Kettle Bell's & Pilates. It Worked

If someone was to ask you "do you think I could do the race?" what would you tell them?

Absolutely  I use myself as an Example 52 Years Old my first Race was November of 2010 a 6 Hour 2 Man Team Event, prior to that I was just a Casual Weekend Rider. My Goal was to Complete & Enjoy the Journey and I did.

What one thing would you not leave home without if you did this race again?

An Open Mind and Clean Canvas

What made this journey so worth while?

The Incredible People I met from around the World. Plus the Staff of the BC Bike Race they Rocked Friendly Helpful & Professional. BC Bike Race First Class all the Way…
